We are well into the new year, it's amazing how fast time goes by. We have a lot of exciting things happening in the next few months.
To start, we had Traveling Show dance tryouts last week and all of your students were placed in their dances for our play. We have started practicing singing all of the songs and will have speaking tryouts next month. The Traveling show is our Fifth Grade program, that celebrates the USA. We will do a couple performances during school hours, and an evening performance for the family and friends. That performance will be on March 18th at 6:30 pm. More information will be coming home soon.
The science fair will be on Feb. 18th, just a little over a month away. While the Science Fair is not required in Fifth Grade, it is a great opportunity to practice for sixth grade (when it is required). Many of my students have expressed an interest in entering a project, so I will send home the information for that.
In class, we are just finishing up our Division unit, and will move on to Fractions, Decimals and Percents next week. Division was kind of tricky for most students at first, but now almost everyone is feeling pretty comfortable with it. In reading, we are learning how to write good summaries and determining which information in a non-fiction book is important, or interesting. We also started our DRA test which should wrap up next week. In Writing, we are very close to finishing our Personal Narrative books that we published in Mighty Authors, and have started working on writing Persuasive Essays. Parents - be prepared to have some powerful persuasion coming your way! We started our Science rotations last week and our class is currently learning about Earth's Changing Surface. Finally in Social Studies, we are studying the Industrial Revolution by creating our own inventions and trying to persuade others to buy them.
