Bully Blocker Assembly and Presidential Speech
Today we had our Bully Blocker Kick-off assembly. Corbin White came and entertained the kids while teaching them about bullies and ways to stop bullying. We had a lot of fun, a lot of laughs, and learned a lot about bullying. Some of the key things we learned were the differences between a bully, a victim and a bystander. We also learned the difference between tattling and reporting. It was a fantastic assembly and a great way to help us start the process of stopping bullying in our school!
Later today we had the opportunity to watch and listen to the President's Back to School Speech. It was inspiring and had a wonderful message. If you would like to read it, head to my UEN page and download it!

Negative Space Animals

We just finished our first Art rotation. I taught Art and we made negative space animals. The students had to pick an animal with a distinct pattern and sketch it. Then they cut the animal out and taped it onto black construction paper. After drawing the animal's pattern, they used chalk pastels to color the pattern. They turned out FABULOUS! Here are a few examples. I couldn't figure out how to rotate the images on the leopard and the zebra, sorry!

Scholastic Book Orders
Our first book order went home yesterday and is due Thursday the 17th. As always, book orders are completely voluntary but are a great way to add fantastic books to your home library. Also, for every order, our class earns bonus points for free books.
Try ordering online at: www.scholastic.com/parentordering

My UEN Page
I am currently setting up my UEN (Utah Education Network) Page. This is a web page provided by UEN for all teachers in Utah. On my UEN page you will find weekly homework, a calendar of events and other important information. I will post most of this information on both this blog and the UEN page, but the weekly homework assignments will be on the UEN page only. I just bought a scanner today so I will hopefully have the site up and running by Monday!

1st Month of School!
The first month of school has been a wonderful success. We have completed our first math unit on Data and Graphs, and will be started on Place Value next week. We are close to knowing all 50 states (thanks to MIMAL, the baker) and will soon start learning the capitols. Guided Reading is off to a great start and I am amazed every day at my student's eagerness to read. They are also showing great potential during Writer's Workshop and they can't wait to start drafting their stories. I have a wonderful group of students this year and really look forward to going to work everyday. Thanks everyone, students and parents, for getting the year off to a great start.
